Students of The Maryland School for the Blind Raise Funds for Blind Texas Student Impacted by Hurricane Ike
October 27, 2008 --Baltimore, MD: Students at The Maryland School for the Blind (MSB) take care of their own when Hurricane Ike devastated the Texas coast, also impacting areas of Austin, where the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is located. “There was a buzz throughout the halls about reaching out to those in need,” says Dr. Michael Bina, President of The Maryland School for the Blind, in northeast Baltimore.
The 18 students of Murray Newman’s class decided to raise money to send to a Texas student and his or her family, who were impacted by the storm. The students designed and printed posters announcing their efforts; which were posted on the schools walls, in the elevators, and on doors to the buildings. As part of the relief effort and in conjunction with cognitive skill lessons, the students went to classrooms and staff offices, explaining their campaign and soliciting donations. Their planning and execution raised $422.
President Bina enclosed a check for the $422 along with a letter, stating the student’s efforts, to William Daugherty, Superintendent of the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. In the letter, Bina exclaims, “On behalf of our incredibly mature and thoughtful students, please forward this check to the family that you have identified as being in need.”
Bina says of the accomplishment, “Surely students learn from teachers, but in this case our students taught all of us who are teachers a profound lesson.”
